Byelection back on Aurora agenda

The possibility of a byelection in Aurora may not be dead.

Even though council rejected the idea at a previous meeting, it may be discussed again tonight.

“Some (residents) are desperately attached to wanting a byelection,” Mayor Phyllis Morris said yesterday.

When former councillor Grace Marsh resigned last month, the onus fell on council to make a decision to hold a byelection or appoint someone to fill her spot.

Since council has already voted against having a byelection and a motion to reconsider this has been defeated, it was thought this was a done issue.

But since council’s decision to reject reconsidering a byelection has not formally been adopted, it could still be discussed tonight.

Ms Morris is ready to move on, emphasizing council has already considered the issue.

“This isn’t about doing the popular thing, it is about doing the right thing. We have already considered this twice. This will be the third time.”

As of 1 p.m. yesterday, the town had received one request from a citizen wanting to speak on the topic.

Anyone can still address council on any topic at the beginning of the meeting during the open forum portion without making a formal request.

A summary of e-mails to the town listed 53 people who had written in favour of a byelection and six in favour of an appointment.

A byelection could cost up to $40,000, town clerk Bob Panizza said.

Council deferred its decision about whether or not to appoint John Gallo, who placed ninth in the last municipal election, until the next council meeting today.
