Ian Rettie’s three-run double keyed a five-run eighth inning rally as the Newmarket Hawks held off the Vaughan Vikings for an 8-5 victory Wednesday night and sweep of a Toronto Baseball Association junior quarter-final series.

Rettie’s blow helped the Hawks to an 8-1 lead before three relievers quelled a Vikings comeback bid in the top of the ninth inning, which saw the visitors score four times.

Ryan Puppi lashed a two-run single to highlight the comeback.

Newmarket starter Travis Welder scattered six hits and struck out 10 Vikings over eight innings for the pitching victory.
James Wellman contributed three hits to the Hawks’ offence.

The win sends Newmarket to the TBA playoff tournament for the fourth straight season.
