Massimo Bertocchi earned a 19th-place finish in the decathlon competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing Friday.

The 22-year-old Maple resident and lone Canadian entrant in the gruelling two-day, 10-event competition that included the shotput, high jump, 400 metres, 100m, long jump, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m, accumulated 7,714 points.

Bryan Clay of the United States took the gold medal with 8,791 points.

A member of the University of Toronto Track and Field Club and three-time Canadian decathlon champion, Bertocchi made his Olympic debut in the Beijing games.
