Matt Lyall may have thought his hockey career was over.

The Richmond Hill resident was diagnosed in 2004 with Wegener’s Granulomatosis, a rare disorder that causes blood vessels to become inflamed and damage organs. It normally happens to middle-age people, not youngsters.

Lyall was 16.

Today, he is captain of the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League and attended training camp with the Atlanta Thrashers of the NHL.

The fifth year OHLer had a career year last season, netting 57 points while earning a plus-24 rating.

There was a heavy York Region presence with new Hounds coach Denny Lambert announced his captain and assistants.

Anthony Peluso of King City and Newmarket’s James Livingston are two of the four assistants.
Peluso, 19, was acquired from Erie in a trade in November.

Livingston, 18, had 44 points last season. He was a third-round pick of the St. Louis Blues in June’s NHL draft

The Greyhounds open the regular season Sept. 19 in Guelph.
