Sometimes a warm place to stay and home-cooked meal, isn’t enough to get someone off the streets permanently.

Inn From The Cold is opening its doors not only to people looking for emergency shelter, but also to four other agencies fighting the same fight.

“By working together with others who provide support services, we are better able to assist common clients,” said the president of Inn From the Cold, Kirby Brock.

Inn From The Cold is an emergency shelter, open during the winter months. Recently renovated, the shelter is now a service hub for homeless services.

“(We) had a founding goal to both provide shelter and work towards reducing homelessness,” Mr. Brock said.

The agencies located  under the Inn From the Cold hub, include the Newmarket Food Pantry, York Regional Alliance to End Homelessness, York Region Food Network, ID Clinic of York Region and Loft Services.

This is one of the few places where homeless programming and public education are together under one roof, said Jane Wedlock the York Region Alliance to End Homelessness public education co-ordinator.

The common roof initiative provides quick access to service for the homeless. The different agencies share space, equipment and contacts.

Inn From The Cold officially opens Dec. 4 and is open Thursday to Sunday from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The shelter is also opened for emergency shelter when the weather dips below -15C.
