Speed skaters compete in meet in Moscow

Andrew Godbout and Jordan Belchos, members of the Markham Speed Skating Club, competed in their first 10,000 metre World Cup speed skating event in Moscow last Sunday and came away with mixed results.

Seeded in the B division and making his World Cup debut, Godbout was paired with Aleksandr Rumyantsev of Russia.

While Godbout held a half-second lead at the 4,400m mark, Rumyantsev regained his initial lead and slowly increased it to the end of the race.

Completing his race in 13 minutes and 52.74 seconds, Godbout finished 18th in the division standings and 43rd in the world in the combined 5,000m and 10,000m World Cup standings.

Also entered in the B division, Belchos was paired with fellow Canadian Jay Morrison and got off to a good start.

Padding his lead steadily to a commanding eight seconds, disaster struck at the two-thirds point in the race when the 19-year-old Thornhill resident lost an edge and fell.

While Belchos recovered to finish the race, he lost 12 seconds and finished in 13:55.68.

After three World Cup events in three successive weeks, Belchos ranks 44th in the world in the combined 5,000m and 10,000m World Cup standings.
