When the interview begins, Georgina Idol winner Vicky Bond is shy and soft-spoken.

She shows off the new piano she bought with her prize money from winning the Idol contest last year then begins to play.

She has an incredible singing voice, but her mother senses she is holding something back and asks shy. Vicky then changes from a shy, Grade 8 student to the confident musician that won last year’s contest. She sings in a beautiful pitch many seasoned vocalists would envy.

Her booming voice sounded even louder in her small bedroom and it becomes clear why the talented vocalist and musician impressed the Idol judges so much.

Vicki, 13, became the youngest Georgina Idol winner last August and her talent continues to grow.

During her time as Idol, she was invited to perform at several events, including the Eaglewood Folk Festival, at a benefit concert at the Stephen Leacock Theatre, the Georgina Business Excellence Awards gala and sing the national anthem at a professional hockey game.

“I was honoured to be invited to each of these events, but my biggest thrill was being invited to attend the taping of the Canadian Idol at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre’s John Basset theatre,” she said.

“Seeing all the behind the scenes production was very exciting. I’ve watched the show on television before, but I never realized so much goes on away from the camera.”

The Town of Georgina and Sutton Agricultural Society are holding open auditions for the fifth annual Georgina Idol competition on Sunday, June 8 starting at 10 a.m.
