Neighbours of the Madeira Park Portuguese Club told council last week they are losing sleep and getting rattled nerves because of loud noise from events held there during the summer.
Barbara Stubbings, a spokesperson for dozens of residents near Baldwin, said the noise is so bad from the Hwy. 48 location it penetrates closed windows.
The racket includes ear-piercing announcements over loudspeakers and music played at high volume, she said.
The noise disrupts normal family activities residents hold on weekends, she said.
“We’re greatly affected by this.”
The noise goes on into the early hours of the morning on most weekends during the late spring and summer, Mrs Stubbings added.
She called the Ontario Provincial Police who told her it is a town bylaw matter, she said.
Mike Klesitz of neighbouring Lyndhurst Park Golf Club has tried to reason with the owner about the noise and other issues, but has been ignored, he said.
“This has been going on for more than a decade,” he said.
“I’ve tried a good neighbour policy with them. This is affecting our business. Our customers have been harassed.”
Bylaw officials can deal with this during their regular patrol hours, but after that York Regional Police can be called to enforce the bylaw, Mayor Rob Grossi said.
Neighbours would prefer no noise be heard at all from the club grounds, but “if they could restrict the hours and keep the volume down” that would be acceptable, Mrs. Stubbings said.
Council voted to send a letter to York Regional Police asking them to enforce the noise bylaw after hours and that a copy be forwarded to the Madeira Park owners.
Bylaw staff will prepare a report prior to any endorsement by council of activity that requires a liquor licence to ensure the noise bylaw is not violated.
Owners of the park could not be reached.
