Keswick High School student Cecilia Lumley is among the winners of the 2008 Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation Excellence Awards. The award recognizes university and college bound students for their achievements in leadership, innovation, academic performance, and community service.
Cecilia, who has already graduated, has lived independently since age 15. While juggling demands not faced by most typical high school students, she has nevertheless managed to make significant contributions to her school community.
Cecilia was the lead organizer for her school’s 30-Hour Famine, which has raised more than $20,000 over two years.
Her desire to create safe school environments for all led her to complete training in peer mediation and peer facilitation, and she is an active member of an anti-bullying committee that gives workshops to elementary and grade nine students.
Cecilia has received several character awards for her anti-bullying work and her participation in the Mayor’s Youth Forum. Building on her strong interest to help others, she intends to study sociology or history in university and would like to be a teacher or youth worker.
On June 23 in Toronto, Lt-Gov. David Onley, will honour Cecilia and other recipients at a reception in Toronto at the Liberty Grand.
Cecilia will receive a one-time $4,000 award. Provincial/territorial award winners will receive a $4,000 award, renewable up to three times (for a possible total of $16,000). National award winners will receive a $5,000 award, renewable up to three times (for a possible total of $20,000).
