A funeral service will be held Friday at the Ice Palace for Joshua Sedore, 14, who died suddenly July 1.
Described as “the heart and soul” of the Georgina Ice Junior C hockey team, Josh had just finished graduating from Grade 8 at R.L. Graham Public School one week before. He was battling Duchennes muscular dystrophy.
Duchennes is a severe recessive x-linked form of muscular dystrophy that affects one in 3,500 males.
His father, Steve, was head coach of the Ice and is the assistant coach of the Ice’s affiliate Newmarket Hurricanes Junior A hockey team who were dealing with the tragic death of teammate Karl Ramolla in a car crash last Saturday near Port Severn.
Mr. Ramolla’s funeral was held today.
“For us and the Hurricanes, Josh was the No. 1 fan. That’s what he lived for was hockey,” Ice president Glenn Ulrich said. “You could ask him questions about anything and he’d know things we even wouldn’t.”
His fondest moments were the Ice reaching the all-Ontario finals in 2003 and this season’s central Ontario championship, Mr. Ulrich said.
“When we won then and when we won this year, he was right with us.”
The funeral service for Josh will begin Friday at 1 p.m. following visitation at the MW Becker Funeral Home in Keswick.
Interment will be held at Queensville Cemetery.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Joshua leaves behind his parents Steve and Candace and sister, Rebecca.
