Neighbouring municipalities have backed King Township into a corner, forcing it to reject a power plant, Mayor Margaret Black said today.

Following a five-hour special meeting yesterday, King now joins Aurora, East Gwillimbury and Georgina as unwilling hosts for the province's planned peak-demand natural gas-fired power plant.

King would have appeared as a willing host if it didn't take a position about the power plant, Ms Black said.

"It's an impossible process that pits municipalities against municipalities," she said.

The province has warned the plant will need to be built within three years to ensure northern York Region has enough power for homes and businesses.

It's unclear if the defiant stance from all four northern towns will impact the province's timeline.

Queen's Park has the ability to step in and decide where the power plant is built.

Several of the five developers, bidding to build the power plant, have ignored the towns and proceeded with their applications.

Two sites have been proposed in King.

The town is home to the new Holland transformer station on Miller's Sideroad. When completed next year, it will add power distribution capacity in York Region.

Actually AuroraGuy, Aurora did reject the peaker plant at the June 24 council meeting. "The Town of Aurora does not support construction of a 350 MW gas powered generation plant on either site that has been selected within the Town of Aurora through the OPA, RFP process by Northland Power or Company X." The motion carried.

Aurora Town Council didn't say "no" to the two plants proposed for Aurora. It said "no" to the residential locations. Building these plants next to residential development and running high voltage lines through those areas isn't an option, Council said.
