The shortage of affordable housing in York Region is set to get at least slightly better with the addition of 40 units in King Township.

At their meeting later this month, council will review a plan for expanding the 27-unit Kingview Court building at 90 Dew Street.

The expansion could include an elevator, which staff say is much-needed by residents.

Construction also gives the region an opportunity to install energy-saving upgrades, including programmable thermostats and Energy Star-rated refrigerators.

The $10 million cost is included in the proposed 2009 capital budget.

Up to $300,000 in costs is expected to come from the province’s Developing Opportunities for Ontario Renters (DOOR) fund.

Nearly $10 million from the fund was allocated to York Region as a one-time grant.

A further $2.8 million could become available from the province early next year.
