Petrozza foils field at Ontario fencing meet
Former Newmarket Fencing Club member Christian Petrozza outduelled Dan Banks of the Westdale Fencing Club to claim the gold medal in the men’s foil at an Ontario Circuit Challenge fencing tournament held Sunday at St. Andrew’s College in Aurora.
Petrozza, a student at Queen’s University in Kingston, scored a 15-12 victory over Banks to highlight results by local competitors at the meet which attracted more than 250 competitors.
Gabriela Shand and Adelaide McDonnell, both NFC members, settled for silver medals in their divisions.
Competing in women’s foil, Shand dropped a 15-12 decision to Vivian Poon of the Mississauga Fencing Club in the final.
McDonnell, 17, tuned up for the senior national championships this weekend in Calgary by reaching the final in women’s epee before falling 15-9 to Joanna Kolbe, also of Mississauga.
Meanwhile, Newmarket resident Jordan Patterson, a student at the University of Western Ontario, claimed bronze in men’s epee.

The two-day event gets under way Saturday at 7 p.m. with cards scheduled in Thai boxing and kick boxing.
Action resumes Sunday with a boxing card slated to start at 2 p.m.
World International Female Boxers Association triple championship holder Lisa Brown is expected to attend Sunday’s boxing card.

Warriors, Kerry Blues clash today in Metro Bowl rematch
The Huron Heights Warriors and St. Michael’s Kerry Blues are due to kick off this morning in one of two Metro Bowl high school senior boys football semifinal games at North York’s Esther Shiner Stadium.
Game time is 11 a.m.
The game is a rematch of the 2007 final won 16-14 by St. Mike’s, with the winner advancing to the Dec. 3 championship game at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Whitby’s Donald Wilson Gaters and Northern Red Knights of Toronto square off in the other semifinal at 1:30 p.m.
Canes greet Jr. Canadiens, Tigers go back-to-back
The Newmarket Hurricanes will seek their third straight win over Central Division rival Toronto Jr. Canadiens when the teams face off in Ontario Junior Hockey League action tonight at the Ray Twinney Complex in Newmarket.
Newmarket, which leads the season series against Toronto 3-1, also seeks to snap out of a two-game mini-steak after bowing 3-2 in a shootout Sunday at the hands of the Stouffville Spirit.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Aurora Tigers also hope to snap out of a two-game slide when they visit the Brampton Capitals tonight.
The Tigers return to the Aurora Community Centre Friday (7:30 p.m.) to host the Dixie Beehives.
Aurora has posted three wins in seven games since the departure of head coach Jerome Dupont who joined the Gatineau Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League earlier this month.
