An initiative involving the RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency snared 4,800 cartons of smokes, worth an estimated $345,600 on the streets, investigators said today.
Officers raided a business on Finchdene Square, in the Markham Road and Finch Avenue area of Scarborough. The cigarettes, which originated in China, were shipped to Canada in a freight container and investigators believe they were destined for the Toronto market.
The seizure represents more than $212,000 in duties and taxes lost by Ottawa and the provinces, police said.
Two Markham men, 39 and 45, along with three Toronto men aged 33, 40 and 43, are charged with the unlawful possession of tobacco products contrary to the Excise Act, 2001.
They are scheduled to appear in court May 30.
