Foam peanuts, industrial wires, bubble gum and pop can wrappers are in for this summer’s fashion.
Those ingredients are being used for this year’s Windfall Ecology Centre Trash Fashion Show and Design awards.
Among the entries is Bubble Angel, a still-under-construction dress by Markham’s Chor-yin Choi. It is sharing the stage with 15 other outfits.
Mr. Choi is a Seneca College design student at the Markham campus who applied through his school to be in the sixth annual show.
“My inspiration came when I was walking in downtown Toronto. I saw birds chewing on bubble gum, napkins were getting stuck to their beaks and I was afraid the birds would choke on the garbage,” he said.
Windfall is a non-profit organization focusing on community environmental initiatives. The June 5 event, a Windfall fundraiser, also features the Second City comedy troupe, musical entertainment and organic food and wine.
The show focuses on the importance of recycling and the extent to which you can reuse almost anything, executive director Brent Kopperson said.
The top three outfits are each awarded $2,000 in prizes.
The show is at Madsen’s Greenhouse at 160 Bayview Pkwy. in Newmarket.
The gala is part of the Windfall Ecology Festival from June 5 to 8 in Fairy Lake Park on Water Street in downtown Newmarket.
Tickets are $50. Check out www.windfallfestival.ca for more information.
