If you’re going to win a writing competition, you don’t just write an essay.

When 16-year-old Sana Malim, a Grade 11 student at Middlefield Collegiate on Highglen Avenue in Markham, decided to enter the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation Human Rights Writing Contest, she went all out.

Instead of a poem, essay, letter or song, Sana created The Unheard, a DVD with music, video clips and a slide show.

The video was made to resemble a son et lumiere show — a kind of evening entertainment where lighting effects are projected onto a building as synchronized music or narration tells a story.

She won.

Sixty-six students from 13 York Region high schools entered submissions.

Winners were selected in different grade and gender categories. Besides winning an award, Sana’s DVD submission will be copied and distributed to all York schools.
