A Markham man who survived 1983 riots in Sri Lanka, dubbed Black July, has the lead role in a Toronto play about the violence.
“As a survivor, it’s a humbling experience to be able to speak on behalf of the thousands whose voices were permanently silenced,” Kurumpasiddy Rasarthnam, 68, said.
The play, What if the Rain Fails, is part of a month-long commemoration of Black July organized by the Canadian Tamil Congress.
The play is being performed at 1, 4 and 6 p.m. Saturday at the Young Centre for Performing Arts at 55 Mill Street, Building 49 in the Distillery district.
Tickets are $5 and available at the box office at

or 416-866-8666.
