The Markham Soccer Club Lightning masters men’s team advanced to the Ontario Cup final after recording a 2-1 overtime win over Ottawa Capital in their semifinal game last Saturday in Oshawa.

Trailing 1-0 after one half, the Lightning scored the equalizer with 15 minutes remaining in regulation time on a goal by Paul Moore.

The Lightning received a lift in the extra session when a Capital player was red carded and Ottawa were forced to play with just 10 players.

In the second overtime period, Richard Alexander overlapped and crossed the ball from the endline to the far side to Chris Rowe, who headed the ball back to John Diniz, who put the ball into the net for the game-winning marker.

The Lightning will face G.S. United in the final Sept. 6 at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan.
