Run/Walkathon is May 25
By: Amanda Persico
There are more than 40 signs on the side of the road pointing in the same direction.
The signs, with the familiar running shoe and wheelchair wheel, remind everyone to lace up and mark May 25 on the calendar, for the 32nd annual Persechini Easter Seals Run/Walkathon.
Funds raised help people such as the Oliver family purchase a needed wheelchair lift for their house and car and assists children such as Julia Oliver, 12, who has cerebral palsy attend a specialized camp. Julia is the 2008 Easter Seals Ambassador and is kicking off the run alongside event founder Joe Persechini.
“It’s equipment that makes life a little easier and more accessible for her,” Julie’s father, Phillip, said. “The equipment helps removes barriers. They are directly for living.”
But you need to prepare for the run before you take to the streets, he added.
There are steps to take before you lace up for the annual Easter Seals fundraiser, national running coach and Runners Place manager Andy Hayes said
“Most importantly, have fun,” Mr Hayes said.
“Remember, most people won’t finish first. And most people won’t finish last either.”
Pre-registration for the run, being held at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, is also at the mall May 22 to 24. Or you can register online at www.persechinirun.org
