Mulock girls get in swing for regional golf title

Vivian Tsui of Bill Crothers Secondary School Colts overcame the elements to fire a four-over-par 75 Thursday to win the York Region Athletic Association girls golf championship Thursday at Mill Run Golf Club in Uxbridge.

Playing Mill Run’s Grist and Wheel courses, Tsui cruised to a six-stroke victory over Sir William Mulock Ravens’ Hayley Brown, who carded an 81.

Brown and third-place finisher Delaney Howson (83) combined to lead the Ravens to a seven-stroke victory in the team standings, ahead of Aurora Golden Eagles.

In boys action, Carson Pickford carded a two-over-par 74 for a one-stroke victory as the Newmarket Raiders captured top spot at the York Region Athletic Association boys golf qualifying tournament Monday at Cardinal Golf Club.

Pickford edged Markham Marauders’ Patrick McCrae and Javier Diaz of the Holy Cross Hawks, who both finished at three-over 75.

In the team standings, the Raiders three-member team scored 233 to claim a six-stroke victory over Holy Cross (239). The Mulock Ravens finished at 242.

In junior, the Dr. G.W. Williams Wildcats edged the Dr. J. M. Denison Huskies by one stroke as Shymal Nagindas (73), Michael Vance (74) and Wesley Brown (85) combined to shoot 232.

Tyler Quinn matched Nagindas with a 73 to lead the Denison squad.

The boys regional final is slated for Tuesday at St. Andrew’s Valley Golf Club in Aurora.

 Wildcats perfect in field ...

 Kim Smith scored twice in a 3-0 victory over the Bayview Bengals and netted the winner in a 1-0 decision over the King City Lions as the Dr. G.W. Williams Wildcats ran their spotless record to three games in varsity girls field hockey Thursday.

Jeanette Bransfield recorded shutouts in both matches as the Wildcats sit atop the Central Division standings with a 3-0 record.

The Aurora Golden Eagles ran their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) with a 3-1 victory over the Sir William Mulock Ravens (2-2).

... and on court

The Williams Wildcats put an undefeated record on the line Monday in North Division Tier 1 senior boys volleyball doubleheader action against the Denison Huskies and host Mulock Ravens.

Williams is off to a 4-0 start to the season to sit atop the North Division standings.

The Sacred Heart Crusaders (2-0) are also unbeaten heading into action on home court Wednesday against Mulock and the Cardinal Carter Celtics.

Walkover for Warriors

The Huron Heights Warriors were awarded a 21-0 forfeit victory when the Maple Timberwolves were unable to field a team for Thursday afternoon’s senior boys football contest in Maple.

The official word is the T’wolves are besieged with injuries and attendance issues. Notably, the Timberwolves are a first-year senior program. Last year, however, the school folded its junior program.

Christian Defreitis scored three touchdowns as the Huron Heights Warriors regained their winning form in junior boys football with a 26-1 win over the Alexander Mackenzie Mustangs ... Kayla Pangos scored 14 points as the Denison Huskies opened the season with a 51-29 victory over the Mulock Ravens in senior girls Tier 1 basketball. Courtney Paterson had 14 points for the Ravens. Meanwhile, the Aurora Golden Eagles dunked the Huron Heights Warriors 49-22 for a second win in as many outings in senior girls Tier 1 basketball ... Dylan Garcia scored both goals to lead the Cardinal Carter Celtics to a 2-2 tie with the Brother Andre Cardinals in senior boys Tier 1 soccer ... Cardinal Carter hosts its 19th annual invitational cross-country meet Wednesday at Boyd Conservation Area in Woodbridge. Races start at 10 a.m. with the awards ceremony slated for 1:45 p.m.
