Several students representing schools in Richmond Hill, Thornhill, Vaughan and Woodbridge made their presence felt on the York University track on the first day of the York Region Athletic Athletic Association championships Tuesday.
In the midget girls’ field, Precilla DeMaria of St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School won the 100m in a time of 13.28 seconds. Ariana Jorgenson of Emily Carr Secondary School won the 80m low hurdles in 13.00. In the long jump, Samantha Gelati of St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic High School finished first with a leap of 4.67m.
Among midget boys, Kirk Facey of Maple High School captured the 100m in 11.95.
In the junior boys category, Derek Oppedisano of Langstaff Secondary School won the shot put with a toss of 11.91m. Garrick Mok of Bayview Secondary School won the triple jump with a leap of 12.31m.
Among senior competitors, Seon Holmes of Vaughan Secondary School won the 100m in 10.99.
In the girls’ division, Jennifer Baker of Alexander MacKenzie Secondary School won the 1,500m open steeplechase in 5:47.00. Amelia Di Chiara of St. Robert Catholic High School won the 100m low hurdles in 14.83. In the high jump, Brittany Hopley of Thornlea Secondary School finished first with a leap of 1.60m. Maria Tyumkin of Langstaff Secondary School captured the long jump with a leap of 5.03m.
The second day of the YRAA championships is today at York University.
The top five placements in each event advance to the Central Region championships at York University May 29 and 30.
