The first day of the York Region Athletic Association track and field championships Tuesday at York University turned out to be a record-setting outing for the Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans team.
Two members of the Spartans contingent rewrote the YRAA record books while several others etched their names in the school’s track and field annals.
Natalie Geiger set a region and school record in the senior girls’ 400 metres when she was first to cross the finish line in a time of 55.57 seconds.
The Grade 12 student also won gold in the 100m in a time of 12.43.
Another regional record was established by Dan Coskun in the senior boys’ shot put as he won the event with a toss of 14.22m.
Coskun also finished second in the javelin, but smashed the prior school mark by almost six metres with a toss of 48.60m.
Other school marks were set by Kate Schlussler in the junior girls’ 80m low hurdles, who won the race in a time of 12.95.
Although finishing third in the open girls’ 1,500m steeplechase, Brittany Dunbar set a school mark after completing the event in a time of 5:54.40.
Among boys, Liam Mitro set a school mark in the midget boys’ 400m, winning the race in a time of 55.54.
While not record-setting marks, other notable performances by Spartans were recorded. Among them was a first-place finish in the midget girls’ discus by Emily Clarkson with a toss of 23.51m. In the same event, Clara Hoover was fifth.
In the junior girls’ discus, Emily Aprile placed fourth.
The midget girls’ 4 x 100m relay team of Jenna Monk, Christie Todd, Demi Chalkias and Lindsay Burrows finished fourth.
In the midget boys’ division, Michael Bourgeois was fifth in the 1,500m and sixth in javelin.
Chris Daniels was fourth in the 100m.
The top five finishers in each event advances to the Central Regional championships May 29 and 30 at York University.
The second day of the York Region championships takes place today at York University.
