There’s not much time for sibling rivalry at the Brown household.

The kids are probably too busy playing one sport another for such antics.

Nor would be a clear-cut advantage for either Tyler and Hayley Brown who were named senior athletes of the year at Sir William Mulock Secondary School in Newmarket.

Quality and quantity is the dual calling card of the brother and sister combination that has parlayed skill and participation to win six athlete of the year awards as students at Mulock. Both were twice named top junior athletes at the school in Grades 9 and 10.

“I wouldn’t say rivalry, although maybe it’s a competition a bit,” said Tyler, 18, who shared his third top male athlete award in four years with Alex McKee. “If we’re not on the same team we practise together at home. I love to be active. And I love to compete and put myself on the line and out there.”

While the pair obviously must compete on different teams for most sports, they have parlayed their talents for co-ed pursuits such as ultimate and badminton.

“We’re a good team and help each other out,” said Tyler, who will attend Wilfrid Laurier University next year to study business. “We know each other so well. We can communicate and understand each other. We can make up for each other’s weaknesses. It’s not so much about skill sometimes as communication. I trust her.”

The siblings both are academic stars, too, with marks in the 90s. But growing up in a sports-mad home, it is the athletic angle that binds them together.

“We’ve always played sports as a family,” said Hayley, a scratch golfer, and a member of the Canadian Junior Golf Association team headed for the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in July in San Diego. It is her second time qualifying for the event.

“Our dad (Jeff) is a huge sports addict. People always wonder if we argue, but we get a long well so we make a good team.

”Being older, (Tyler) keeps me competitive in a lot of sports, but I’m ahead of him in golf.”

This school year, the siblings were teammates in badminton and played on the same line in ultimate. But the family name has been found on rosters for a myriad of sports, including volleyball, basketball, golf, tennis and track. Outside of school, both have squash on their resumes.

“I’m not good enough to pursue some sports out of school, but it’s fun playing a lot of sports in school,” said the 16-year-old Hayley, whose golf game has already attracted interest from approximately 20 NCAA schools. “Playing sports at school is a character builder and good for team-building and friendships.”

Tyler capped his career at Mulock by earning the Raven’s Award, the top athletic award afford to students at the school.

Based on an accumulation of points based on participation and achievement in athletics, he finished with 326 points surpassing the former mark of 280. Students must acquire at least 250 points to be eligible.

“It’s probably the best award I’ve won at Mulock,” Tyler said. “It’s quite an honour.”

Hayley will follow in her brother’s footsteps in one other area when she returns for Grade 12 in the fall. She takes on the role of student council president from her brother for the 2008-09 school year.
