Doggone it! Joseph is a Maple Leaf againVeteran Curtis Joseph celebrated Canada Day by signing a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2008-09 NHL season.
The 41-year-old free agent goaltender inked the $700,000 deal to become the backup to Vesa Toskala.
Joseph, a King Township resident, sits fourth in all-time regular season victories with 449, including 133 wins in 249 appearances as a Maple Leaf over four seasons from 1998-2002. During that time, he led the Leafs to two Eastern Conference finals before signing as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings.
“Curtis will provide outstanding support to Vesa Toskala this season,” said Maple Leafs’ general manager Cliff Fletcher Tuesday on the team's website. “He had tremendous success playing in Toronto in years past and we expect him to be a stabilizing influence on our team, both on and off the ice. We are really excited to have him back in our team's colours.”
The 19-year veteran also played for the Phoenix Coyotes and, last season, joined the Calgary Flames. As a Flame, he appeared in nine regular season games and two playoff matches as the backup to Miika Kiprusoff.
United under-14 girls put boots to Wexford for Robbie titleGoals by Cassandra Briscoe, Kandyce Whitehead and Ashley Campbell powered Newmarket United to 3-0 victory over the Wexford Wolverines Monday in the girls under-14 division championship game of the 42nd Robbie International Soccer Tournament at Highland Park in Scarborough.
The victory capped a five-game unbeaten run for United in the 12-team division.
After posting a 3-0 record in pool play, Newmarket rolled to a 7-0 victory over North London Meteors to qualify for the final of the prestigious tournament.
McDonnell slices way back into medal contentionAdelaide McDonnell rallied from a slow start to secure a bronze medal in women's under-17 epee at the junior national fencing championships held on the weekend in Montreal.
Seeded 17th following the preliminary round, McDonnell knocked off the first and eighth seeds in the elimination round before bowing 15-13 to Andreanne Demers of Montreal in the semifinals.
McDonnell also teamed with Isabelle Gauthier of Ottawa and Mississauga's Joanna Kolbe to reach the final of the team competition before bowing 45-35 to Quebec.
Howson claims prize at Toronto Star women's event Delaney Howson of Glenway Country Club defeated Vivian Tsui 3-and-2 to win the first flight title in the Toronto Star Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament Friday at Thornhill Golf and Country Club.
The 16-year-old Howson, a Grade 11 student at Sir William Mulock Secondary School, reached the final against Tsui, a member of Station Creek Golf Club, on the strength of a 1-up victory over Scarborough Golf and Country Club’s Amy Roberts in the semifinal round.
Howson qualified for match play in the 140-golfer field by finishing 18th after two rounds of stroke play in the four-day event.
The top 16 scores made the cut for the championship round.
Senior Hawks roll past struggling Thornhill RedsShortstop Liam O’Brien hit a solo home run and a run-scoring single as the Newmarket Hawks scored eight runs in the first three innings and trounced the Thornhill Reds 10-2 Tuesday night in Greater Toronto Baseball League action at McKnight Field.
The victory was the third straight for the Hawks, now 9-8, and boosted the club over the .500 mark for the first time this season. Newmarket sits third in the six-team league.
The Reds fell to 4-10 with the loss.
The Hawks host the Martingrove White Sox for a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
