Gormley golfer aces jr. tour stop

Ryan Brown fired a five-over par 77 to win the boys 17-19 division of the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s Kaneff Junior Series event at Royal Ontario Golf Club near Hornby Aug. 12.

The Gormley resident won his age group class by three shots.

In other age groups, Wesley Brown finished in a two-way tie for 17th in the Boys 14-16 division after shooting a 22-over par 94.

The Gormley resident finished 16 shots behind James Rim of Ajax, who had a six-over-par 78.

Motocross rider makes top 10

When Russell Zarzeczny made his debut at the 17th annual TransCan Amateur Motocross Grand National Championships in Walton, Ont., his goal was a top-10 finish.

Mission accomplished.

Competing in the largest amateur motocross event in Canada, the 16-year-old Stouffville native finished ninth in the 80 category.

The championships are staged on a farmland near Goderich, and included a variety of jumps, corners and other obstacles.

“It was my first time at the Grand National Championships,” Zarzeczny said. “The competition was stiff and the three 20-minute motos were longer than I’m used to, so I’m satisfied with my results.”

Riding since he was 10 years old, the former St. Mark School student earned a berth in the championships after accumulating enough points during the season in regional competitions.

In addition to that, he placed fifth overall in his class at the Monster Energy Amateur Summer Classic MX in New Berlin, N.Y., while competing against riders from across the United States.

Zarzeczny is already setting his sights on making a return visit to the championships.

“I plan to train harder for next year and my aim is to get on the podium,” he said.

Hathaway on NASCAR podium

Jason Hathaway and his Stouffville Team 3 Red/EHR Snap-on Tools Dodge auto racing team recorded their first career podium finish in the NASCAR Canadian Tire series after finishing third in Sunday’s GP3R 100 event at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres in Quebec.

Starting in the eighth position within the 28-car field, Hathaway manoeuvered his way into fourth place near the midway point of the 42-lap event.

A quick response and direction by Hathaway’s spotter, Ray Doucette, coupled with some careful driving through a last-lap accident in corners eight and nine amongst the leaders allowed Hathaway to power through.

Coming off a ninth-place effort at the recent NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Full Throttle 200 race at Mosport, Hathaway was ecstatic.

“This has been a great weekend for this team,” he said. “We came here with a good car, practised and qualified well and this race was a lot of fun to drive. I really like running the road courses and to finish off the last road course of the season with a podium is pretty awesome,” he said.

Stouffville’s Peter Gibbons drove his Canadian Tire/Mobil Ford to a 12th-place finish.

The next race in the NASCAR Canadian Tire series is Aug. 30 with the Coke Zero 200 at the Cayuga Motor Speedway near Nelles Corners, Ont.

Mustangs edge East Gwillimbury

A goal by Emily Kaunismaa proved to be the difference as the Stouffville Mustangs under-12 girls edged East Gwillimbury 1-0 in their York Region Soccer League contest in Ballantrae last Thursday.

The win by the Mustangs improved their record to 6-2-3 and came on the heels of a 4-3 road loss against Unionville-Milliken.

Sarah McGilvray scored twice for the Mustangs while Victoria Wicks added the other marker.

In the York Region Soccer League Cup, the Mustangs advanced to Saturday’s semifinals but fell 4-0 to the eventual champions, North Toronto.

The Mustangs resume league play today on the road against North Toronto.

Bell second at Rolling Hills tourney

David Bell recorded a second-place finish at the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s Junior Open at Rolling Hills Golf Club in Whitchurch-Stouffville Wednesday.

Entered in the boys 17-19 division, the 18-year-old Stouffville resident finished 10 over par through the two-round event with a 154 (77-77).

He finished one shot behind winner Chad Currie of Owen Sound, who was nine over par at 153 (76-77).
