Alcohol a factor: OPP
By Joe Fantauzzi, Staff Writer

A double fatal crash, police say was linked to alcohol, Friday morning that killed a Woodbridge man, did not need to happen, Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino said.

At about 4:40 a.m., a Ford F250 pick-up truck headed east in the westbound lanes of Hwy. 403 slammed head-on into a Toyota Corolla near Eglinton Avenue in Mississauga, according to OPP.

According to a statement issued by Commissioner Fantino, the crash took place while OPP officers were rushing to respond to calls from drivers about a pick-up truck travelling the wrong way on the highway.

The impact killed two men in the Corolla, a 48-year-old Woodbridge resident and a 45-year-old from North York.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Through a police news release issued Friday, the families of both men requested their names not be released.

“Two innocent people are dead as the result of an impaired driver,” Commissioner Fantino wrote in the statement. “This person should not have been behind the wheel.”

The man driving the pick-up was taken to Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga with minor injuries, according to police.

John Bakai, 25, of Burlington is charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death, two counts of impaired driving causing death and two counts of driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in the blood causing an accident with a fatality.

Mr. Bakai was held in custody and was scheduled for a court appearance Saturday in Brampton.
