Not all Vaughan politicians take up food bank challenge
Keely Grasser
The generosity of the Vaughan community has once again been proven.
Organizers of the Oct. 4 SavourVaughan Thanksgiving food drive are thrilled with the result of this year’s event: more than $16,000 and hundreds of thousands of non-perishable food items were collected for the Vaughan Food Bank.
“Everyone was extremely receptive to the food drive this year,” said SavourVaughan co-organizer Elvira Caria of the event, held at Fortino’s at Hwy. 7 and Ansley Grove Drive Saturday.
Aside from donations from local citizens and businesses, several local municipal politicians also did their part.
This comes after food drive organizers challenged all members of Vaughan council to raise $16,000 for the cause. That’s the amount it costs to serve the 4,000 meals the food bank gives out each day.
Ms Caria said regional councillors Gino Rosati, Mario Ferri and Joyce Frustaglio and councillors Bernie DiVona and Tony Carella handed over either cash or food donations they collected.
There is still time for residents to help out, as well.
“We’re definitely still taking donations,” Ms Caria said. “The food drive doesn’t end until the Thanksgiving weekend.”
You can drop off food donations at the Vaughan Food Bank, 71 Marycroft Ave. in Woodbridge (905-851-2333) or donate cash at any Vaughan district TD bank to account number 5017654 1898.
