Three members of the Newmarket Stingrays received individual awards Thursday night at Swimming Canada’s Big Splash annual awards banquet in Toronto.
Matthew Swanston was named Canadian male junior swimmer of the year to highlight the club’s success.
The triple threat marked the Newmarket-based swim club’s first awards at the national level.
The 17-year-old claimed the award as top under-18 swimmer based on the highest scoring swim of the year.
Swanston’s winning swim was the 200-backstroke at the world junior championships in Monterrey, Mexico in July. His time of 2:00.53 scored 907 points on the FINA points chart.
His father and Stingrays head coach, Alan Swanston, was named Canadian male junior coach of the year.
Meanwhile, Olympian Lindsay Seeman was awarded the Speedo Golden Kickboard Breakout Swimmer of the Year award voted on by members of the national team and recognizes the swimmer who burst on to the international scene.
As a 15-year-old, Seemann she participated in the 200-metre backstroke at the Beijing Olympic Games in August.
