Oscar Peterson, Harry Bowes schools open Sept. 2
Jim Mason, staff writer

There will be no extended summer vacation or temporary change of address for Stouffville public school students next month.

Two new elementary schools under construction in opposite corners of the community will open on time Sept. 2.

“We were able to expedite construction of both schools through a combination of increased supervision and closer co-ordination of multiple trades working on the sites at the same time,” Ross Virgo, spokesperson for the York Region District School Board, said Monday.

“We’ve also had excellent co-operation from the building department of the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.”

Oscar Peterson Public School is on Hoover Park Drive, just west of Stouffville District Secondary School. Harry Bowes Public School is on Greenwood Street, next to St. Brigid Catholic School.

It was a beehive of activity at Oscar Peterson Tuesday, with trucks delivering cement and asphalt. The parking lot was being flattened, as tradespeople worked inside.

Plans had been made to house students in other public schools if the new schools weren’t ready.

The public board is opening six new elementary schools and one high school across the region this fall:

• Bill Crothers Secondary School, the region’s new sports oriented high school, is in Unionville.

• Donald Cousens Public School is in Markham, near Major Mackenzie Drive and Hwy. 48.

• Alexander Muir Public School is in Newmarket and Dr. Roberta Bondar Public School and Herbert H. Carnegie Public School are in Vaughan.

The York Catholic District School Board does not have any schools scheduled to open this September.

The public board closed Orchard Park Public School in Stouffville in June after 50 years.
