NASCAR Canada entry on a roll

The Stoufffville Team 3 Red/EHR racing team is on a roll.

And with the 2008 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series winding down, it couldn’t happen at a better time in their quest to take a run at the overall point standings.

In last Sunday’s The Coke Zero 200 race at Cayuga Motor Speedway near Hamilton, Jason Hathaway drove the team’s Snap-on Tools Dodge to fourth place, for their second straight top-five placing.

Hathaway overcame engine difficulties during practice sessions and had to replace its motor and miss the qualifying sessions.

Hathaway was forced to begin the 200-lap event at the back of the pack in the 22nd position on the 3/8-mile oval before manoeuvering his way into contention.

Hathaway vaulted up in the point standings and occupies 10th place with 1,301.

“We got behind early, but we never gave up,” said Hathaway. “The guys (pit crew) worked hard to get this motor changed and it was up to me to show them what all their hard work could accomplish.  We also moved solidly into the top 10 in points this weekend.”

Peter Gibbons drove his Canadian Tire/Mobil Super Cheverolet to a ninth-place finish. The Stouffville resident began the race in the fourth position.

Gibbons occupies seventh place in the overall point standings with 1,379 points.

Scott Steckley holds the overall series lead with 1,639 points.

Mark Dilley took the checkered flag in the race.

The next race in the series is scheduled for this Saturday in Barrie with the Pizza Pizza 300 at the Barrie Speedway.

Soccer Mustangs blanked

The Stouffville Mustangs under-12 girls failed to generate any offence in their recent York Region Soccer Association road contest against Whitby and fell 4-0.

Now 7-4-3 on the season, the Mustangs resume league play today at Ballantrae fields against Wexford at 6:30 p.m.

The Mustangs will then conclude their regular season Sept. 11 in Oshawa.
