Several members of the Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans cross-country team had strong finishes on the Boyd Conservation Area trails in Woodbridge at the Cardinal Carter Invitational Wednesday.

In the junior boys’ 6,000-metre event, Liam Mitro finished seventh after crossing the finish line in 22:42.28. Teammate Michael Bourgeois was 10th in 22:57.59, Mitchell Price 22nd and Mitchell Browne 28th.

Brittany Dunbar finished 30th in the senior girls’ 5,000m event.

In the senior boys 7,000m race, Kyle O’Brien was 75th.

Rugby team in final

The Spartans senior boys’ rugby team won three of four matches at Fletcher’s Field in Markham Wednesday during the Rugby Ontario 10s invitational high school tournament.

Entering the 24-team event as the second seed, the Spartans reeled off victories against Brampton Centennial 20-7, Eden Christian College School (Niagara-on-the-Lake) and Twin Lakes Secondary School (Orillia) 20-10 before losing their final game to top-seeded Streetsville Secondary School (Mississauga) 10-5.

Jesse Lofthouse scored the lone try for the Spartans in the final game.

Despite falling short in the final, Spartans head coach Jamie Hewitt was pleased.

“The whole team played well,” he said.

Hewitt was especially ecstatic with the play of Lofthouse, a first-year senior.

“He’s having a whale of a fall season. I’m so pleased with his progress. To go from junior to senior is a big jump. But he’s a gamer and seems to play better the better the competition is,” Hewitt said of the Grade 11 student.

The Spartans seniors and bantams will play an exhibition series Thursday at 3 p.m. against Dr. J.F. Dennison Secondary School (Newmarket).

The Stouffville teams play exhibition matches Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. against Robert Clack School, a touring team from Dagenham, England.
