Markham council officially reopened the 19th Avenue bridge last week.

Construction began in July on the bridge, which is on 19th Avenue between Markham Road and Ninth Line.

The original bridge, which crosses the Little Rouge Creek, was built in 1930 and was six metres wide.

Its design was widened to 13 metres and high performance concrete was used in its construction to help increase durability and prolong the structure’s life, according to the town.

This is part of Markham’s ongoing bridge program which monitors, maintains and upgrades existing bridge structures to ensure safety and to meet the needs of Markham’s growing community.

The replacement project, which cost just over $750,000, was funded out of this year’s budget.

Councillors attended the reopening ceremony, where a commemorative plaque was unveiled.

A tree was also planted as part of the Markham Trees for Tomorrow program.
