The students of Richmond Green Secondary School are presenting Grease, the celebrated musical, this coming week.
The musical that debuted on Broadway in the 1950s, and was adapted into a Hollywood movie in 1978, will be brought to life on stage at Richmond Green.
Students in lead roles are Kevin Alves, who plays Danny Zuko, and Luiza Vitchnovich playing Sandy Dumbrowski. Aline Daniel is producer and two Richmond Green teachers are directing the play, Cathy Clarke and Karen O’Meara.
“Grease is a timeless classic,” said Ms Daniel. “Although it’s set in the 1950s, it remains the story of two teens from different worlds who fall in love and struggle with adolescence.”
“We have tons of great songs, classics like ‘Greased Lightening’ and ‘Summer Nights’,” she added. “We also have hallmark ‘50s costumes like skirts and leather jackets.”
The show’s production was a school-wide initiative. Marketing classes are raising awareness and driving ticket sales, art classes are painting sets and backgrounds, and communication technology classes created the program that the audience will find on their seats the evening of the play.
There was also some outside support. Internationally-acclaimed vocal coach, Elaine Overholt, helped the actors. She’s worked with stars like Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere and Queen Latifah.
Show dates and times are Wednesday, Dec. 3 and Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door at $10 for adults, $5 for elementary school students and are free for children under five years.
Richmond Green is at 1 William F. Bell Parkway in Richmond Hill.
