Variety of restaurants join forces for annual Savour Vaughan
David Fleischer
The team behind Savour Vaughan wants you to know there is more to your hometown’s cuisine than pizza and pasta.
“We wanted to defuse the idea that there are only Italian restaurants in Vaughan,” said Savour Vaughan co-organizer, Elvira Caria.
This is the fourth incarnation of the event that gives local restaurants a chance to strut their stuff.
The idea is based on the Winterlicious and Summerlicious campaigns, big hits in Toronto over the past few years.
Select restaurants provide prix fixe menus, giving you a chance to check out some of the local eateries you might normally miss.
A prix fixe menu is a collection of pre-determined items presented as a multi course meal at a set price.
“We’re not reinventing the wheel here,” Ms Caria said. “I just think it was time something like this occurred in Vaughan.
More than 20 restaurants are participating this time out, including new additions such as Little Bombay and Marini’s.
There is also a waiting list for fine dining establishments that would like to participate in the next event in October.
Savour Vaughan takes place in traditional restaurant downtimes, in the spring and fall and it has been a boon to restaurateurs taking part.
Eateries get repeat business and bookings for private functions from diners who had not previously know about them, she said.
There is always a charity component to Savour Vaughan as well and this year it takes the form of a wine tasting evening — accompanied by a classical guitarist in a candlelit wine cellar, no less — at Magnotta Wines.
All proceeds go to CanLyme, supporting Lyme Disease research.
The first Magnotta night took place Thursday and the next is scheduled for this Thursday.
The organizers also attempt to go beyond mere culinary delights, setting up Savour Vaughan deals at local hotels and spas.
“Really, it encapsulates what Vaughan has to offer,” Ms Caria said.
